The town of Ingall in northern Niger became an open arena for horsemanship and desert heritage as camel and horse races were held as part of the 59th edition of the Cure Salée festival, one of the country’s largest annual gatherings of herders and nomadic tribes.
The races took place on Saturday, October 3, 2026, before an official and public audience, marking one of the festival’s highlights — an event that blends cultural celebration, pastoral activity and commercial exchange.
The races go beyond sporting competition: they are a living showcase of the skills of riders and herders in handling horses and camels, and a chance to display breeds, training methods and traditional ornamentation.
Three categories, distances up to 15 kilometers
The competitions were split into three categories: horses covered 8 kilometers, young camels raced over 10 kilometers, and the senior camel race stretched to 15 kilometers.
Organizers set aside total prize money of 8.7 million CFA francs for the top five finishers in each of the three categories.
In the horse category, the winner received 1 million CFA francs, second place 750,000, third 500,000, fourth 300,000 and fifth 200,000.
In the young camel race, the winner took home 750,000 francs, against 500,000 for second, 300,000 for third, 200,000 for fourth and 150,000 for fifth.
The top prize went to the winner of the senior camel race, who received 1.5 million CFA francs, while second place earned 1 million, third 750,000, fourth 500,000 and fifth 300,000.
At the closing ceremony of the races, the Union of Nigeriens for Vigilance and Patriotism presented a camel to head of state General Abdourahamane Tiani and another to Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine.
A festival born of pastoral life
Cure Salée is held after the rainy season, when herds of camels, cattle and sheep head to the Ingall area, known for its salt pastures and mineral-rich waters.
This seasonal journey helps animals replenish salts and minerals before the dry season sets in, which is why the festival has been tied from its origins to the economic and social cycle of herders, and has never been merely a celebration.
The annual gathering also provides a space for tribes and pastoral communities from different regions to meet, renew social ties and discuss issues related to pastures, water and livestock migration routes.
Traditional gatherings play a role in settling disputes and reducing potential conflicts between herders and farmers, giving the festival particular importance in fostering coexistence and social peace.
Art, dress and desert memory passed to a new generation
The races are accompanied by artistic and musical performances and traditional dances, including Tuareg and Fulani shows, alongside the sharing of poetry, songs and oral tales.
Participants appear in traditional dress, turbans and silver jewelry, while horses and camels are adorned with handmade saddles, blankets and bridles, turning the competitions into a living exhibition of desert arts and crafts.
These activities give younger generations an opportunity to learn their ancestors’ skills, ways of handling animals and nomadic ways of life, helping protect intangible heritage from disappearing.
A season that moves the economy and tourism
The festival has an economic impact on Ingall and the Agadez region more broadly, boosting trade in livestock, foodstuffs, leather goods, silver jewelry and traditional clothing.
Transport, accommodation, restaurants and services also benefit from the influx of participants, visitors and delegations from across Niger and neighboring countries.
Authorities and organizations also use the large gathering to provide veterinary services, vaccination campaigns and guidance for herders, along with awareness activities on environmental protection and the management of water and grazing land.
Amid the neighing of horses and the thud of camel hooves, Cure Salée continues to serve its dual role: celebrating the heritage of the desert and sustaining a pastoral way of life that remains a core cultural and economic pillar in Niger.
