Mauritania’s main opposition groups have announced plans to hold a public rally in the northern city of Nouadhibou on Sunday, July 5, to protest what they describe as the rising cost of living and increasing prices.
The event will bring together the Democratic Opposition Institution, led by Hamadi Sid El Mokhtar, the Democratic Opposition Coalition headed by Mohamed Ould Maouloud, and the Democratic Alternation Coalition led by Biram Dah Abeid.
The opposition said the rally will mark the first in a series of demonstrations planned across the country’s interior regions to pressure the government into reducing fuel prices, which it says place an unfair burden on citizens.
The same opposition groups organized a similar rally in the capital, Nouakchott, in May, condemning government measures adopted in response to the global rise in energy prices following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
The opposition blames the government for growing social tensions, arguing that its economic policies and restrictions on public freedoms have worsened living conditions.
It called on the authorities to take urgent measures to improve living standards, reduce fuel and basic commodity prices, combat corruption, and direct public resources toward serving citizens.
