South Sudan President Kiir Orders Major Cabinet and Military Reshuffle Amid Mounting Political Pressure

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has announced a sweeping government and military reshuffle, replacing senior officials in defense and finance as political pressure, economic strain, and international scrutiny intensify ahead of elections scheduled for December 2026.

According to official decrees broadcast by the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation, General Santino Deng Wol was reappointed as Chief of Defense Forces, replacing General Paul Nang Majok.

In the finance sector, Kuol Daniel Ayulo was appointed Minister of Finance, replacing Salvatore Garang Mabiordit, whose tenure lasted less than two weeks.

Additional appointments included Clement Juma Mbugonvia and Mahjoub Biel Turuk.

Observers say the reshuffle reflects efforts to consolidate control ahead of elections.

South Sudan continues to face economic challenges linked to oil dependency, inflation, and supply disruptions.

The United Nations Security Council recently renewed the mandate of United Nations Mission in South Sudan, warning of risks of renewed conflict.

The UN estimates that nearly 10 million people require humanitarian assistance.

The United States government has conditioned election support on political reforms and detainee releases.
