Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) announced in a statement released through its Az-Zallaqa media outlet that its fighters had seized full control of a military checkpoint belonging to the Malian Armed Forces in the town of Fana, in the Ségou region, on Sunday morning.
The statement did not provide further details about the operation, including casualties, material losses, or whether the group continues to hold the position.
Fana is located approximately 120 kilometres northeast of Bamako on the strategic highway linking the capital to the city of Ségou, making it an important military and logistical hub.
The claim comes amid a noticeable increase in JNIM attacks in recent months targeting military bases and security installations across central and southern Mali, reflecting the group’s expanding operational reach beyond its traditional strongholds.
The Malian military has not yet issued an official statement regarding the claim.
