Coordinated ADF Assaults Leave Dozens Dead in Eastern DRC as Security Situation Worsens

The security situation in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has deteriorated sharply following a series of coordinated attacks attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces, an armed group linked to Islamic State Central Africa Province. Officials in Ituri and North Kivu confirmed that at least 36 people were killed over the past 48 hours in attacks targeting communities along the provincial border.

According to regional authorities and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the assaults took place between May 5 and May 7 in areas including Mambasa, Beni, and surrounding villages.

In Biakato, at least 15 civilians were killed in a direct attack, while additional raids in border villages such as Katerrain and Mangambo left 21 more dead.

Local officials confirmed that 19 bodies were recovered and transported to a hospital mortuary, while others were buried locally due to security risks.

Search operations for missing persons are ongoing, with fears that the death toll may rise.

A recent report by Amnesty International warned that the attacks may constitute war crimes and described a scorched-earth strategy targeting civilians.

The group has reportedly targeted health centers, food storage, and civilian infrastructure.

The violence continues despite joint operations between FARDC and Ugandan forces.

Officials say some progress has been made, but concerns remain about gaps in remote areas.

Military operations are ongoing, with reports of militant movement near river zones.

The attacks have worsened the humanitarian situation, displacing hundreds of families.

The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues civilian protection efforts despite a reduced presence.

Humanitarian groups warn civilians remain at high risk.

Authorities say several territories remain under high threat.

Casualty figures remain provisional.
