Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency has carried out a major operation targeting senior Al-Shabab figures in the Middle Shabelle region, marking a significant development in the country’s ongoing counterterrorism campaign.
According to official statements, the strike focused on the Guulane area after intelligence indicated a large gathering of militants preparing for a coordinated attack.
The operation was conducted as a pre-emptive measure and resulted in the deaths of more than 33 militants.
It unfolded in two phases, with an initial strike targeting a location used for leadership meetings, followed by operations in surrounding areas to pursue militants attempting to flee.
The operation also destroyed key logistical infrastructure, including a command site and vehicles used for transporting fighters and weapons.
Security officials said the objective was to weaken both leadership structures and operational capacity.
Authorities have called on civilians to report suspicious activity, emphasizing the role of public cooperation in preventing regrouping.
The strike forms part of broader efforts, supported by international partners, to strengthen security and counter extremist threats.
Officials described the operation as a significant step toward disrupting future attacks, although security challenges remain.
