Ukraine War Enters Fourth Year as Deadly Strikes Hit Civilians and New U.S. Peace Push Emerges

Ukraine entered the fourth year of Russia’s full-scale invasion on Monday amid one of the heaviest winter aerial barrages, rising civilian casualties, and intensified diplomatic efforts led by the United States to push for a negotiated end to the war.

Deadly Overnight Attacks

Ukrainian officials said Russia launched 11 ballistic missiles and 149 attack drones overnight in a coordinated assault across the country. Ukraine’s air defenses intercepted 116 drones, but at least 23 drones and several missiles struck 15 locations, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.

In the northeastern Kharkiv region, a drone strike on a residential area in Bohodukhiv killed a 41-year-old woman and her 10-year-old son. In the southern port city of Odesa, one person was killed when a drone hit an apartment building, damaging a nearby gas pipeline.

Additional shelling and strikes in the Chernihiv and Donetsk regions killed at least two elderly civilians. Authorities said at least 36 people were wounded nationwide, including a 13-year-old girl injured in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Ukrainian emergency services continued search and repair operations on Monday, while energy and gas infrastructure teams worked to stabilize damaged facilities amid freezing winter temperatures.

U.S. Pushes June Peace Deadline

The latest attacks came as a major diplomatic shift appeared to be taking shape. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has set a June 2026 deadline for Ukraine and Russia to reach a peace agreement.

Washington has proposed a new round of trilateral talks involving the United States, Ukraine, and Russia, potentially to be held in Miami as early as next week. Ukrainian officials have accepted the invitation, while Moscow has expressed skepticism about holding negotiations on U.S. soil.

Despite renewed diplomatic momentum, core disagreements remain unresolved. Russia continues to demand that Ukraine cede all occupied territory in the Donbas region, while Kyiv insists that its internationally recognized 1991 borders are a non-negotiable starting point for any settlement.

Assassination Attempt Raises Security Tensions

Security concerns escalated further following the attempted assassination of Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, a deputy chief of Russia’s military intelligence agency (GRU). Russian authorities said Alekseyev was shot multiple times on Friday in Moscow and remains hospitalized.

On Sunday, the United Arab Emirates extradited Russian citizen Lyubomir Korba to Moscow. Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) alleges Korba carried out the attack on behalf of Ukrainian intelligence.

Ukraine has denied any involvement in the shooting, although Kyiv has acknowledged responsibility for other high-profile operations targeting Russian military and security figures since the war began.

Diplomatic Appeal to Europe

Separately, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha issued a fresh appeal to the European Union, urging a total, lifelong entry ban on any Russian citizen who has signed a contract to fight in the war.

Sybiha cited Estonia as a precedent, noting that the country has already begun implementing national bans on Russian combatants. He argued that such measures would “set the right price for wrong choices” and reinforce accountability for participation in the invasion.

As fighting intensifies and diplomatic pressure mounts, analysts warn that the coming months may prove decisive on both the battlefield and the negotiating table, with civilians continuing to bear the heaviest cost of the conflict.
