Opposition political figures from Guinea-Bissau met in Dakar, the Senegalese capital, calling on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to take firm action against the military coup that occurred in their country two weeks ago.
The meeting, which also included civil society representatives, comes two days before an extraordinary ECOWAS summit scheduled for Sunday.
Participants urged the regional bloc to show the “same firmness” it recently demonstrated in response to an attempted coup in Benin, warning that “double standards” would undermine its credibility.
Through their spokesperson, Dara Fonseca Fernandes, the opposition urged ECOWAS leaders to issue a clear decision restoring constitutional order by recognizing the victory of presidential candidate Fernando Dias da Costa and installing him in office—without any military intervention.
They stressed that alternative copies of electoral records are still available in the regions, despite some being destroyed on the day of the coup, and that these can be used to proclaim the final results, which they believe should form the basis for restoring constitutional legitimacy.
