A recent UK study has found that people suffering from insufficient sleep tend to have brains that appear older than their actual age, raising the risk of cognitive decline and dementia.
The study analyzed data from over 27,000 individuals aged 40 to 70, using advanced AI-powered brain imaging techniques.
Findings showed that unhealthy sleep patterns—such as short sleep duration or persistent insomnia—made the brain appear about one year older than expected.
Researchers emphasized that this “accelerated brain aging” is tied to significant health risks, but noted that improving sleep habits could help protect the brain in the long run.
