Equatorial Guinea’s Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue has accused France of orchestrating efforts to destabilize his country.
The remarks, posted on platform X, came in response to France and Germany awarding their joint Human Rights Prize to opposition activist Alfredo Okenve — a move Malabo’s government condemned as “rewarding treason.”
Obiang said France was “encouraging agents of hate” and undermining peace, recalling what he described as a “coup attempt” in 2017.
The escalation comes as Obiang continues to face legal proceedings in France, where he was convicted in 2021 on charges of corruption and money laundering. Tensions between the two countries remain high amid disputes over seized assets, including a luxury property in Paris.
