The UK Health Security Agency has issued an urgent warning about the rapid spread of a new coronavirus variant named “Stratus”, which is beginning to replace currently dominant strains.
Official data shows that this variant now accounts for 4 out of every 10 new infections in the United Kingdom.
Experts have described “Stratus” as a “hybrid strain”, combining features of two previous variants, which gives it greater transmissibility and immune evasion capabilities.
While there is no evidence that it causes more severe symptoms, its fast spread has raised concerns about a potential new wave of infections in the coming weeks.
Health authorities have urged vulnerable populations to remain cautious, stressing that the current vaccines still offer protection against severe complications.
They also emphasized the need for continuous monitoring of the epidemiological situation, especially with the approach of autumn.
This warning coincides with the emergence of other concerning variants, such as “Nimbus”, adding further complexity to the current global health landscape.
The World Health Organization continues to monitor these developments closely in order to take appropriate action.
