Authorities in Burundi say a series of powerful explosions in Bujumbura were caused by a technical failure at a military depot rather than an external attack.
The army said the incident occurred at an ammunition storage facility in the Musaga military camp after an electrical short circuit sparked a fire that ignited stored munitions leading to prolonged explosions.
Thick smoke was seen rising over the city as residents reported repeated blasts and a large cloud forming in the sky.
The explosions triggered panic among السكان with many fleeing their homes amid initial fears of a coup attempt or coordinated attack before officials clarified the cause.
Local reports تشير إلى أن burning projectiles landed outside the base causing limited damage in nearby neighborhoods and broken windows in residential areas.
No official casualty figures have been released while emergency teams confirmed the fire has been contained and safety operations are ongoing.
The president urged calm saying the situation is under control and under investigation.
The interior ministry advised residents to avoid the affected area and report any suspicious objects warning against misinformation.
Officials stressed there is no broader security threat and a full report is expected soon.
