Uganda has become Africa’s leading coffee exporter, overtaking Ethiopia, according to a report by the country’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, following the close of the 2024–2025 growing season in October.
Uganda’s coffee exports reached around 504,000 tonnes, generating record revenues of approximately $2.4 billion, compared with 470,000 tonnes exported by Ethiopia.
The figures represent a sharp increase from the previous season, when Uganda exported 384,000 tonnes worth $1.3 billion.
The growth has been driven by a surge in arabica coffee output, supported by improved quality and rising global demand, alongside a strong performance in robusta coffee, with exports up 31% in volume and 19% in value.
Europe remains the main destination for Ugandan coffee, accounting for 63% of total exports, with Italy ranking as the country’s largest importer.
