Tanzania Releases Election Protest Detainees Amid Fears of Continued Crackdown

Tanzanian authorities have released more than 100 youths who had been detained on treason charges linked to the 29 October 2025 election-day protests.

The release fulfills a promise made by President Samia Suluhu Hassan following her re-election, a move widely interpreted as a conciliatory gesture.

Despite this, concerns remain over the persistence of a heavy-handed security approach, as authorities continue arresting activists and social media influencers — particularly in WhatsApp groups — on accusations of incitement to violence.

Meanwhile, the opposition is planning new demonstrations on December 9, the date on which the government cancelled national celebrations and redirected their budget to infrastructure repairs.

It is worth noting that the controversial October elections were marred by allegations of fraud from the opposition and international observers, and were followed by violent crackdowns that left hundreds dead, according to the opposition, while authorities have yet to release any official casualty figures.
