General Horta N’Tam, commander of Guinea-Bissau’s land forces, was sworn in on Thursday as the country’s transitional president for a one-year period, following a military coup that ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.
The new authorities’ first decisions included reopening borders and lifting the curfew, although media outlets remain banned except for state-controlled channels.
The ousted president condemned the coup, which occurred three days after the legislative and presidential elections.
The takeover sparked widespread international condemnation. The ECOWAS bloc and the African Union demanded the immediate release of Embaló and all detainees.
Ghana also condemned the military action, while Russia voiced concern over the unfolding situation.
