Police in Nigeria have announced that 25 female students were abducted by armed men during an overnight attack on a government girls’ boarding secondary school in Kebbi State, in the country’s northwest, early Monday morning.
According to a police statement, the assailants — armed with sophisticated weapons — stormed the students’ dormitory at around 4 a.m., firing indiscriminately.
Despite a swift response by security forces, the attackers managed to scale the school’s perimeter wall and flee with the abducted girls to an unknown location, the statement said.
The assault also resulted in the killing of a staff member and the wounding of another teacher.
In response, police have deployed joint teams from the police, military and local vigilante groups to comb nearby roads and forested areas in an operation aimed at rescuing the girls and apprehending the perpetrators.
The attack comes amid a wave of ransom kidnappings in Nigeria, particularly in the northwest, where armed gangs frequently raid villages and terrorize local communities.
