Microsoft has suspended the Israeli Ministry of Defense’s access to certain cloud and AI services.
The move follows a Guardian investigation that uncovered evidence of the Israeli army using these services in a large-scale surveillance project targeting Palestinian civilians.
Company president Brad Smith confirmed that Israel’s Unit 8200 intelligence division used the tools to store and analyze millions of phone calls from Gaza and the West Bank, while denying that Microsoft had provided technology specifically tailored for mass surveillance.
The investigation further indicated that the system was deployed during the Gaza war to help identify targets for airstrikes.
