Deadly explosions in Bujumbura military camp kill civilians and raise safety concerns

Authorities in Burundi say at least 13 civilians were killed and dozens injured after powerful explosions at a military depot in Bujumbura caused by an electrical fault.

The incident occurred at an ammunition warehouse in the Musaga area where a short circuit triggered a fire leading to prolonged explosions of stored munitions.

Projectiles were thrown into nearby residential neighborhoods causing panic and civilian casualties.

Official figures report 13 dead and 57 زخى injured most of them civilians with some victims reportedly from a nearby prison.

Homes and infrastructure were heavily damaged with fires and debris affecting surrounding areas.

Emergency teams and the Red Cross were deployed to evacuate the injured and assist residents.

The president confirmed the incident was accidental and urged calm while authorities issued safety warnings.

Residents have been told to avoid unexploded ordnance and report any suspicious objects.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of military storage facilities near populated areas.
