Gunmen abduct 14 students from commercial bus in Benue as rescue operation intensifies

Authorities in Nigeria have confirmed the abduction of 14 passengers, most of them students, following an armed attack on a commercial bus along the Makurdi–Otukpo road in Benue state.

Security sources said the victims were traveling to sit for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination when gunmen intercepted the vehicle, forced passengers off, and took them into a nearby forest.

One passenger managed to escape during the attack and alerted authorities, prompting a swift security response.

The state governor condemned the incident as a serious criminal act and said security agencies have been fully mobilized to secure the safe release of the victims.

He added that all available resources are being deployed and urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement by providing any useful information.

Police confirmed that a coordinated search-and-rescue operation is underway, with tactical units deployed across the Otukpo axis, alongside an investigation into the circumstances of the attack and possible security lapses.

The incident highlights persistent security challenges affecting transport routes in parts of Nigeria, despite recent measures aimed at improving safety during examination periods.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, and authorities have not disclosed any contact with the abductors.

Families of the victims are awaiting updates as rescue efforts continue.
