Kenya flood crisis worsens as death toll rises and displacement grows

Kenya is facing a deepening humanitarian crisis as widespread flooding has killed dozens and displaced thousands following days of heavy rainfall.

Authorities say the death toll has reached 81 with most fatalities caused by drowning and electrocution as rescue operations continue under difficult conditions.

The capital Nairobi has been heavily affected with dozens of deaths reported in low lying and densely populated areas while western regions have seen large scale displacement after rivers burst their banks.

In one western county more than three thousand families were forced to flee their homes as floodwaters submerged houses and farmland while landslides destroyed homes in other مناطق.

Nationwide over thirteen thousand people have been displaced many of them taking shelter in temporary evacuation centers.

The crisis has exposed major infrastructure weaknesses particularly in Nairobi where residents near a dam have been urged to evacuate due to fears of partial structural failure.

Flooding has also damaged agricultural land destroying crops and raising concerns over food security.

The government has deployed military rescue units police and humanitarian teams to assist affected communities and provide relief.

However analysts say poor urban planning and drainage systems have worsened the impact of flooding especially in the capital.

Weather forecasts indicate that heavy rainfall is likely to continue increasing the risk of further flooding.

Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to move to higher ground as the situation remains unstable.
