Senegalese mediation has succeeded in securing the release of Guinea-Bissau’s ousted president, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, who arrived safely in Dakar on Thursday evening aboard a private aircraft.
The development follows an emergency summit of West African leaders, during which they condemned the military coup led by General Horta N’Tam, who has been sworn in as transitional president for a one-year term.
The military had detained President Embaló and announced the suspension of the electoral process, as the country awaited the results of last Sunday’s presidential and legislative elections.
