Guinea-Bissau Votes for a President in a Highly Polarized and Competitive Election

Guinea-Bissau is holding its presidential election this Sunday, in a fiercely contested race between incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, seeking a second term, and his main challenger Fernando Dias, backed by the historic revolutionary party.

Embaló is facing 11 other candidates in what observers describe as the country’s most competitive election in three decades.

The vote is taking place amid sharp political polarization and a tense electoral atmosphere, after authorities barred the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde from participating due to late submission of its documents.

Fernando Dias is seen as the strongest contender, enjoying significant popular support.

Embaló is campaigning on a platform of continued stability and development, while Dias promises to improve basic public services and reduce military influence in politics.

Preliminary results are expected within 48 hours of polls closing.
