AU Commission Chair Denies Claims of Genocide in Nigeria

African Union Commission Chair Moussa Ali Youssouf has denied allegations of “genocide” in northern Nigeria, rejecting U.S. President Donald Trump’s claims that large numbers of Christians are being killed.

Speaking at a press conference at the UN headquarters in New York, Youssouf noted that “the first victims of Boko Haram are Muslims,” urging caution before making statements that could inflame religious tensions.

In response to Trump’s threats of “swift” military action and suspension of aid, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to combating violent extremism and protecting all citizens, expressing hope that Washington would remain a close partner.

Boko Haram’s 15-year insurgency has claimed tens of thousands of lives, with human rights experts confirming that the majority of victims are Muslims.
