U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to launch “targeted strikes” inside Nigeria, following reports of deadly attacks against Christian communities in the country’s north.
The threat came after reports of dozens of civilians killed in assaults blamed on armed groups. Trump said the United States “will not stand by in the face of the slaughter of Christians”, revealing that military and intelligence options were being reviewed to counter what he called “religious terrorism.”
The Nigerian government responded firmly, rejecting any form of foreign military intervention, insisting that “national sovereignty is non-negotiable.”
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said authorities were investigating the recent incidents and pursuing those responsible. The government reaffirmed that it “will continue to defend all citizens regardless of ethnicity or faith”, while expressing hope to maintain Nigeria’s strategic partnership with Washington despite the current diplomatic rift.
