Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has won a landslide victory with 95% of the vote in the country’s presidential election, amid violent protests that have reportedly left hundreds dead, according to opposition sources.
The election took place after the main opposition challengers were either jailed or disqualified, prompting critics to denounce the process as an exercise in systematic political repression.
The opposition Chadema party claimed that around 700 people were killed by security forces during the unrest, while the United Nations confirmed at least 10 fatalities.
In response to the turmoil, the government imposed a nationwide curfew and suspended internet access, while President Samia Suluhu Hassan has yet to issue a public statement on the deadly events or the allegations of widespread abuses.
