The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution endorsing Morocco’s autonomy plan under its sovereignty as a potential and pragmatic solution to the long-standing Western Sahara conflict.
The U.S.-backed resolution urges all parties to engage in serious negotiations based on the Moroccan autonomy proposal, describing it as the most credible framework for achieving a lasting political settlement.
The Council also renewed the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) for one additional year.
Russia, China, and Pakistan abstained, while the remaining members voted in favor.
In response, Algeria and the Polisario Front rejected the resolution, reiterating their stance on the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.
