The armed forces of Guinea-Bissau have announced that they foiled an attempted coup, leading to the arrest of several senior military officers, including a general and two prominent commanders.
Deputy Chief of Staff Mamadu Kuroma said the detainees — General Dhaba Na Waalna and commanders Domingos Nhanque and Mário Medana — were taken from their homes in the capital, Bissau, describing the plot as “a new attempt to undermine the constitutional order.”
The arrests come on the eve of the official launch of the campaign for the parliamentary and presidential elections scheduled for November 23, in a country that has suffered from decades of political instability since gaining independence from Portugal in 1974.
President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has previously claimed to have survived two coup attempts, the latest in December 2022, while disputes with the opposition continue over the official end date of his presidential term.
