South Africa’s ruling coalition is facing a sharp internal debate over race-based legislation, as the Democratic Alliance (DA) pushes to repeal laws designed to promote Black participation in the economy.
The party argues that its proposed “Economic Inclusion for All” bill would tackle poverty as a measure of deprivation rather than race, claiming that the current system “has fueled corruption.”
In contrast, the African National Congress (ANC) insists such laws remain vital for fairness, noting that the white minority—about 7% of the population—still holds over 60% of senior management positions.
The controversy underscores the ongoing challenges of addressing the deep-rooted inequalities left by apartheid, more than three decades after its end.
