Ethiopia has issued a statement rejecting what it described as Egypt’s “escalatory rhetoric” regarding the Nile River and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), saying such statements reflect attempts to dominate the river’s resources.
The Ethiopian response came a day after Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi accused Addis Ababa of harming Egypt and Sudan through the dam’s operations, calling for international action to secure a legally binding agreement.
Addis Ababa’s statement stressed that disputes can only be resolved through direct dialogue among the concerned parties, emphasizing that water security must be built on the fair and reasonable use of the Nile’s waters.
Talks over the dam have been stalled since 2024, while parts of Egypt and Sudan have experienced flooding due to rising Nile levels amid continued deadlock over filling and operation terms.
