Los Angeles: FBI Uses Advanced Tech to Identify Masked Protesters

The FBI announced this morning that it has identified a masked protester who threw rocks at a federal officer during a demonstration in Los Angeles on June 7. A warrant has been issued for the suspect, and a $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to his arrest.

The case sheds light on the FBI’s sophisticated biometric technologies, particularly facial recognition systems capable of identifying individuals even when their faces are partially covered. These systems rely on analyzing partial facial features (such as eyes and forehead), as well as behavioral markers like walking patterns, and are supported by a vast database of over 640 million images.

However, civil rights organizations—including the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights—have raised concerns about the lack of clear federal regulation, warning of the potential for misuse and mistaken identity
