In a report published on September 8, Spanish broadcaster À Punt cited the EFE news agency as saying that a Burkinabè security source had confirmed that authorities were informed of a Spanish citizen’s abduction on September 4. The source attributed the incident to an unnamed terrorist group.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said security forces were gathering information to locate the man and secure his release, without providing details about the circumstances or precise location of the alleged abduction..
