German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul began a two-day official visit to Mauritania on Monday aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and partnership between the two countries.
According to Mauritania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visit focuses on expanding cooperation and enhancing the strategic partnership between Nouakchott and Berlin across areas of mutual interest.
During his stay, Wadephul is expected to hold talks with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani and Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug on bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues.
The Associated Press reported that the Mauritania visit is part of a broader African tour that also includes Nigeria and South Africa, with the aim of strengthening Germany’s engagement with African partners and exploring new economic and investment opportunities.
The trip marks the first visit by a German foreign minister to Mauritania in nearly two decades, since current German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited the country in 2006 while serving as foreign minister.
