South Africa launches nationwide military backed operation to fight gangs and organized crime

South Africa has launched a large scale security operation involving the military to tackle rising gang violence and organized crime across multiple provinces.

Around 2200 personnel have been deployed in a year long mission designed to support police forces and stabilize high risk communities.

The operation focuses on gang violence in key urban areas while also targeting illegal mining networks linked to armed groups in other regions.

Under the legal framework the police retain authority over arrests while the military provides support including patrols and logistical assistance.

Troops were deployed immediately in violence affected neighborhoods following deadly shootings highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Joint coordination between military police and local authorities signals a unified response to crime.

Community leaders have welcomed the deployment but stress that security measures alone will not solve the problem.

Calls have been made for parallel investment in jobs education and youth support to address root causes.

Authorities aim to restore control disrupt criminal networks and rebuild public trust.

Analysts say long term success will depend on sustained efforts beyond the military deployment.

Residents are now watching whether the operation can mark a turning point in the fight against crime.
