The Nigerian military has reported a major operational success in Zamfara State following a coordinated ground and air offensive while security challenges continue across the northwest.
The operation took place in Tsafe area where troops engaged armed groups in a seven hour battle in forest terrain.
At least sixty five fighters were killed including senior figures within bandit networks such as Iliya Sarki and a commander known as Dogo Bete.
Analysts say the deaths could disrupt command structures coordinating attacks in Zamfara and nearby regions.
The clashes began after armed groups attacked local civilian security volunteers before military reinforcements intervened and confronted around three hundred fighters on motorcycles.
Despite the success between seven and ten members of local volunteer forces were killed during the fighting.
In a separate incident armed groups carried out coordinated raids in Bukkuyum area abducting more than one hundred fifty civilians mostly women and children.
Authorities described the incident as one of the largest mass kidnappings in recent months with rescue efforts still ongoing.
In neighboring Kaduna state troops rescued thirty one people abducted during an attack on a church after engaging the assailants in a firefight.
Five civilians were killed during the initial attack before the rescue operation.
The developments highlight both military progress and ongoing challenges as armed groups remain capable of adapting and carrying out large scale attacks.
Security experts say sustained operations improved intelligence and stronger local protection will be essential to maintain gains.
Authorities face growing pressure to translate battlefield successes into lasting security for affected communities.
