The joint United States–Israel military campaign against Iran has entered its fourth day, marking one of the most consequential escalations in Middle East geopolitics in decades. The operations, conducted under the codenames Operation Epic Fury (United States) and Operation Roaring Lion (Israel), have expanded in scope and intensity, raising alarm across the international community.
Military Operations Intensify
According to the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), more than 1,250 targets inside Iran have been struck since the campaign began. Officials say the strikes are focused on facilities linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including command centers, missile launch installations, air defense systems, and drone production sites.
Israeli forces have simultaneously expanded operations beyond Iranian territory, launching strikes in Beirut, Lebanon, targeting positions associated with Hezbollah, a key Iranian ally.
Casualties and Losses
The conflict has already resulted in significant casualties on multiple fronts.
The United States confirmed that six American service personnel were killed during Iranian retaliatory strikes on positions in Kuwait. Additionally, three US F-15E fighter jets were mistakenly shot down by Kuwaiti air defense systems; all crew members survived.
Iranian officials report heavy civilian casualties, including 165 schoolgirls and staff killed in a strike on a primary school in Minab. The claims have not been independently verified, but humanitarian organizations have expressed grave concern.
Nine major Iranian hospitals are also reported to have sustained serious damage, compounding fears of a rapidly deteriorating humanitarian crisis.
Death of Iran’s Supreme Leader
In a development that has dramatically reshaped the political landscape, Iranian state media confirmed on March 1 that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in an initial strike targeting his compound.
The death of Khamenei who had held ultimate authority in Iran since 1989 — has triggered a leadership transition amid wartime instability. An interim council composed of the Iranian President, the Head of the Judiciary, and a senior cleric has assumed temporary authority in Tehran.
Political Objectives and Strategic Messaging
The campaign is being led by US President Donald Trump, who returned to office in January 2025.
While some US officials describe the mission as focused on dismantling Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities, President Trump has publicly called for regime change, urging Iranians to “reclaim their country.”
On March 2, the president indicated that although initial projections estimated a four-to-five-week operation, Washington is prepared for a longer military engagement if required.
International Alarm and Economic Fallout
The United Nations has issued strong warnings regarding attacks on civilian infrastructure. Senior UN officials reminded all parties that hospitals and schools are protected under international humanitarian law.
Global markets are reacting nervously to the possibility of a full shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a substantial share of the world’s oil supply passes. Even the threat of disruption has fueled fears of soaring energy prices and broader economic instability.
Meanwhile, the US State Department has issued a “DEPART NOW” advisory for American citizens in more than a dozen Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Jordan.
