Nigerian Forces Repel Coordinated Insurgent Assaults in Borno

Nigerian troops have repelled a series of coordinated attacks launched by insurgent fighters across several strategic locations in the northeastern state of Borno, according to military officials.

The assaults targeted multiple military positions during overnight operations as fighters affiliated with Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province attempted to strike several forward operating bases almost simultaneously.

Military authorities said the attacks unfolded across key towns including Konduga, Kawuri, Marte, Jakana and Mainok, areas considered critical in the ongoing counter-insurgency campaign in northeastern Nigeria.

Officials said insurgents employed a multi-pronged strategy designed to overwhelm security forces by hitting several positions at the same time and stretching military response capabilities across the region.

Despite the scale of the offensive, troops mounted what the military described as a strong defense, repelling the attacks after hours of intense firefights in several sectors.

Military sources said a number of insurgent fighters, including senior field commanders, were killed during the clashes.

Troops also recovered weapons used by the attackers, including assault rifles and anti-aircraft guns abandoned during the fighting.

The military confirmed that one officer was killed during the engagements, marking one of the latest casualties in the long-running conflict in northeastern Nigeria.

Following the attacks, additional reinforcements were deployed along key transport routes, particularly the highway linking Maiduguri with Damaturu.

Security teams have begun sweeping operations along the corridor to detect and remove improvised explosive devices that may have been planted along the road.

The route remains one of the most important logistical arteries connecting the Borno state capital with southern parts of the country.

Security analysts say the locations targeted during the attacks carry significant strategic value.

Mainok and Jakana sit along a vital supply corridor used by both military convoys and civilian traffic moving in and out of Maiduguri.

Marte, located near the Lake Chad basin, is frequently contested because of its agricultural resources and its proximity to militant movement routes across the region.

Konduga and Kawuri serve as entry points toward the Sambisa Forest, long regarded as one of the main strongholds of Boko Haram fighters.

Military officials say insurgent groups are increasingly adopting asymmetric tactics, including night raids, ambushes and the use of armed drones.

In response, the Nigerian military has intensified aerial surveillance operations through the air force and strengthened defenses at remote forward operating bases.

Analysts believe recent military offensives in areas such as the Sambisa Forest and surrounding regions have placed pressure on militant networks, prompting them to launch retaliatory attacks against military positions.

Authorities have placed sections of the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway under heightened security alert and urged civilians to cooperate with security checkpoints and follow official travel advisories.

Military officials say operations across northeastern Nigeria will continue as part of efforts to dismantle insurgent networks and restore stability in the region.
