Airstrike on hospital kills dozens and deepens Sudan’s healthcare collapse

Dozens of civilians were killed and many others injured in an airstrike targeting a teaching hospital in East Darfur marking one of the deadliest attacks on a medical facility since the war in Sudan began.

The strike coincided with the first day of Eid al Fitr amplifying its humanitarian impact as the hospital was largely destroyed and rendered inoperable cutting off essential care for hundreds of thousands of residents.

Health sources said the victims included children women including pregnant النساء as well as patients and medical staff highlighting the heavy civilian toll.

Dozens more were wounded including healthcare workers while key departments such as emergency maternity and pediatric units sustained severe damage.

Responsibility for the attack remains disputed with conflicting accusations from parties to the conflict and indications that a nearby security site may have been the intended target raising concerns over precision and proportionality.

The hospital has now been struck multiple times since the conflict began reflecting a broader pattern of attacks on healthcare infrastructure.

International data shows hundreds of attacks on medical facilities in Sudan with thousands of casualties recorded since the الحرب started contributing to a near collapse of the healthcare system.

Estimates indicate that most health facilities in conflict affected areas are either closed or only partially operational worsening civilian suffering.

The incident has drawn strong international condemnation with warnings that targeting medical sites constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

Aid organizations say the destruction of the hospital will significantly worsen an already critical health situation in the region.

With fighting ongoing and no clear resolution humanitarian groups are calling for urgent action to protect civilians and preserve remaining healthcare services.
