Gaza Humanitarian Crisis Worsens Despite Ceasefire

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached a dire milestone as residents continue to face severe shortages of medical care, food, and essential supplies, nearly five months after a ceasefire agreement was signed in October 2025.

Human Cost of the Medical Blockade

The death of two-year-old Nidal Abu Rabeea on Sunday has become a stark symbol of the “slow-motion” crisis at the Rafah crossing. Nidal’s family had held medical referral documents for 14 months, yet the child was never granted passage. He died from complications of an enlarged liver and chronic fever.

His one-month-old sister remains in Al-Aqsa Hospital under similar circumstances, with her life hanging in the balance as the family waits for the approval that may never come. Since the Rafah crossing’s closure on May 7, 2024, at least 1,360 patients have reportedly died while awaiting travel permits.

Gaza by the Numbers

The impact of the conflict over the past 28 months has been devastating:

Total Fatalities: Official sources report 72,072 Palestinians killed and over 171,700 injured. Independent studies, including a recent Lancet Global Health report, suggest the death toll may be higher due to uncounted casualties under rubble.

Chronic Illness Crisis: Gaza is home to 350,000 chronic patients. The number of kidney patients has halved since 2023, primarily due to lack of dialysis and medical care.

Medical Evacuation Backlog: Approximately 20,000 people, including 4,000 children, urgently require medical evacuation. At the current approval rate of 15–50 patients per day, aid organizations estimate it could take more than four years to clear the backlog.

Fragile Ceasefire and Aid Shortfalls

The October 2025 ceasefire remains fragile, with ongoing disputes over its implementation:

Aid Shortages: Under the 20-point plan, 260 aid trucks per day enter Gaza—far below the 500 trucks per day required to prevent famine.

Continued Hostilities: More than 600 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire, in strikes described by Israeli officials as “surgical operations against violations,” while Gaza authorities report daily breaches of the agreement.

Aid agencies warn that without a significant acceleration of medical evacuations and delivery of humanitarian supplies, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza will continue to escalate, placing countless lives at risk.
