Senegal and Mauritania Deepen Strategic Partnership with New Agreements and Energy Milestones

Senegal and Mauritania have strengthened their strategic partnership following a high-level diplomatic visit highlighting expanding cooperation in energy, infrastructure, security, and regional development.

Mauritanian Prime Minister Moctar Ould Djay concluded a 48-hour official visit to Dakar, reciprocating Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko’s January 2025 trip to Nouakchott and signaling renewed momentum in bilateral relations.

Several Memoranda of Understanding were signed, covering industry, mineral resources, scientific cooperation, and regional coordination in the Senegal River Valley. Security and mobility issues, including the implementation of the June 2025 free-movement agreement, featured prominently in the talks.

Energy cooperation remains the cornerstone of the partnership, anchored by the jointly developed Grand Tortue Ahmeyim LNG project. The project reached a key milestone in late 2025 with the first LNG exports, positioning both countries as emerging gas producers.

Infrastructure projects, notably the Rosso Bridge over the Senegal River, were highlighted as catalysts for trade and regional integration, underscoring the growing economic and strategic alignment between Dakar and Nouakchott.
