Niger’s defence and security forces said on Sunday that extensive military operations carried out across the country had resulted in the killing of 40 armed militants and the arrest of 96 individuals suspected of having links to extremist groups.
In its weekly statement broadcast on state television, the army said joint air and ground operations also led to the seizure of weapons, ammunition and prohibited materials. The confiscated items included 23 firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition, around 194 kilograms of cannabis, and more than 17,000 litres of smuggled fuel.
The statement added that two improvised explosive devices were destroyed during the operations, which were conducted as part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and restore security and stability nationwide.
