The United Nations has sounded the alarm over the worsening humanitarian crisis in northern Mozambique, after renewed attacks by armed groups in Nampula province triggered the country’s largest displacement wave this year.
According to data from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 107,000 people have been uprooted in recent weeks, bringing the number of displaced over the past four months to around 330,000. The total number of people displaced since the conflict began in 2017 now exceeds 600,000.
Paula Emerson, head of OCHA’s office in Mozambique, said families are being forced to flee repeatedly with no opportunity to recover, adding that the current pattern of displacement has become harsher and more prolonged than in the early stages of the conflict.
