Portugal’s Judicial Police have questioned Denizia Reis Embalo, the wife of former Guinea-Bissau president Umaro Sissoco Embalo, as part of an investigation into suspected money laundering and illicit fund trafficking.
The probe was launched following the arrest of a passenger arriving from Bissau to Lisbon carrying nearly €5 million in cash. Denizia Reis Embalo was on board the same flight, directly linking her legal situation to the incident, according to judicial sources.
The investigation comes amid heightened political turmoil in Guinea-Bissau, weeks after a military coup in late November that led to the suspension of the country’s ongoing electoral process.
Portuguese authorities have so far not announced any formal charges, stating that inquiries are continuing to establish the origin and intended destination of the seized funds.
