The government of Niger has announced an “immediate and permanent” suspension of entry visas for U.S. citizens, in response to the U.S. administration’s decision to bar Nigerien nationals from obtaining visas to the United States.
Authorities in Niamey said the decision, which took effect upon publication, is based on the principle of reciprocity and reflects a new foreign policy direction aimed at asserting national sovereignty.
Niger’s move follows the signing, on December 16, of a decree by the United States administration banning Nigerien citizens from receiving visas, as part of a broader tightening of U.S. immigration policy affecting 39 countries, including 19 under a full ban.
