New International Coalition Calls for Release of Niger’s Former President

A new international coalition, named “Friends of the Former Nigerien President,” has been formed to demand the release of ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

The group brings together political figures, legal experts, academics and human rights advocates. Its creation follows a call by a UN Human Rights Council working group for Bazoum’s immediate release. He has been held in detention since his overthrow on July 26, 2023.

The coalition condemned the conditions under which the former president and his wife are being held, urging respect for their rights and for their treatment to comply with international laws and conventions.
