Guinea-Bissau’s military authorities have announced the release of six political opposition figures who had been detained since the 26 November coup that ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.
The junta described the move as a “gesture of goodwill”, saying in an official statement that it reflects a “commitment to restoring constitutional order and respecting international rights and obligations”.
The release followed a visit to Bissau by a high-level Senegalese delegation, which met with the detainees and called for their freedom.
The step comes amid mounting pressure on the military authorities from the international community and the ECOWAS, which last week warned it could impose “targeted sanctions” on any actors obstructing a return to civilian rule in the country.
