U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his warning to Israel against taking any steps that could undermine the political transition in Syria, expressing his satisfaction with the performance of Syria’s new president, Ahmed Al-Shaar.
The remarks came after a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote:
“It is very important that Israel maintain a strong and genuine dialogue with Syria, and that nothing be done to interfere with its development into a prosperous nation.”
He noted that his administration is pleased with Al-Shaar’s leadership since he took office following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in late 2024, adding that Washington has supported reconstruction efforts and the lifting of harsh sanctions.
The statements follow an Israeli military operation last Friday in the town of Beit Jinn, southwest of Damascus, which resulted in casualties on both sides.
Israel said the operation targeted members of the “Islamic Group Movement.”
Netanyahu’s office confirmed that he has received an invitation from Trump to visit the White House “in the near future”, as part of efforts to ease tensions between Tel Aviv and Damascus.
