Nigeria’s state-owned oil company, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), has announced an explosion on the main Escravos–Lagos gas pipeline, disrupting operations and triggering an emergency response.
The company said the blast occurred near residential areas in the coastal state of Delta, noting that initial inspections showed a sharp drop in pressure. No details were provided on the extent of the damage or on possible casualties.
The strategic pipeline, with a capacity of 2.2 billion cubic feet per day, is a key artery supplying power plants and industries in southwestern Nigeria, raising concerns about potential disruptions to the country’s electricity supply.
NNPC said response teams are working with local authorities, while investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the explosion.
