An explosion struck a mosque on Wednesday evening in the city of Maiduguri, capital of Borno State in north-eastern Nigeria, while worshippers were performing prayers, according to security sources and eyewitnesses.
Agence France-Presse reported that at least seven worshippers were killed in the blast, with several others injured.
The explosion occurred in an area close to the border with Cameroon, a region known for the presence of armed groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province, which have previously targeted mosques and crowded public spaces with suicide bombings and improvised explosive devices.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
The incident comes amid a long-running insurgency that has gripped north-eastern Nigeria since 2009, a conflict that has killed more than 40,000 people and displaced nearly two million others.
