ECOWAS announces troop deployment to Benin after foiled coup attempt

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has ordered the immediate deployment of personnel from its standby force to Benin to support authorities following the recent failed coup attempt.

In a statement, the bloc said troops from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana are being sent to help safeguard Benin’s constitutional order and territorial integrity.

Separately, a Nigerian presidential source and an air force spokesperson confirmed that Nigerian aircraft carried out strikes on targets inside Benin in coordination with local authorities.

The military spokesperson stressed that the operations were in line with ECOWAS protocols and the regional standby force framework, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to regional security.
