The death toll from the sudden floods that swept through the Moroccan city of Safi on the Atlantic coast has risen to 37, according to an updated statement by local authorities.
This marks the deadliest weather-related disaster in the country in a decade.
The city, located about 300 kilometres south of the capital Rabat, was hit on Sunday by severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall that triggered exceptional flash floods. Water inundated numerous homes and shops, causing widespread damage.
Authorities said that 14 people remain hospitalized, including two in intensive care, adding that search-and-rescue operations and assistance for affected residents are still ongoing.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education announced the suspension of classes in all schools across the province for three days due to the continued deterioration of weather conditions.
